This painting is all about remembering to protect our inner peace. The world is a fast paced place to be, and we're constantly juggling multiple responsibilities, relationships, and the like, which often leads to self neglect when it comes to our own mental, emotional and physical health.
Octopuses have 9 brains - 8 of these are present in their 8 tentacles, and the other in their head.
The octopus in this painting represents the viewer, with her many tentacles, each independent from the other and managing a separate task. Safe in her own space and managing her boundaries, she ensures she's controlling how much she takes on by 'guarding the gate', her gate, always conscious of her limits and protecting her realm.
